With a never say die attitude, the South Hill Little League All-Stars punched their ticket to Williamsport, Pennsylvania and the Little League World Series with a 13-7 victory over the West Valley Little League team from Idaho. Having lived in South Hill/Puyallup for 7 years, I was fortunate to witness some very good baseball in the Pacific Northwest Region. So it did not surprise me when we saw one of Austin’s former coaches–Derek Jennings–involved in the program. I do not know much about the boys on the team, other than I am familiar with Jenning’s son, Rawly. Derek Jennings is affiliated with New Level 360, a baseball youth training facility.
Austin played under Coach Jennings for 4 seasons at New Level. Coach Jennings was one of the most passionate, approachable, and knowledgeable coaches that Austin ever played for. Famous for his infield skills, Coach Jennings knew the precise formula for getting kids to reach their maximum potential.
The South Hill Little League continues their journey towards the Little League World Series on August 16th at 6:00PM Central Time. If you can afford to donate a cup of coffee or beverage of choice to the coaches and kids, they have set up a fundraising site. The costs associated with fulfilling these kids dreams is not inconsequential. As a parent of a former travel ball player, I understand the challenges of unexpected expenses associated with team activities. I am sure at least one of the families on the team is not in a financial position to embark on this trip, and I know that Coach Jennings will ensure that the money is distributed where it is needed the most.
Here is to the Northwest Region Champion South Hill Little League out of tiny Puyallup (PEW-all-up), Washington. Wishing you the best of luck in capturing the spirit and comradery of the Pacific Northwest.
