
Recently, I came to the realization that for the greater part of my career, I have been looking at information security through filtered lenses. I have largely ignored a very vulnerable population of people–the elderly. I suppose I have always taken it for granted, as both of my parents were very literate about basic computer hygiene and spotting scams and the like. However, it seems like at least every quarter, the local news media runs stories of elderly people being targeted by scammers and falling victim to attacks against them.
Technology evolves extremely rapidly and the truth is that our elderly population are literally hanging on by their fingernails as the pressure to maintain contact with their loved ones in a fast-paced world leaves them little choice but to adapt or else. Today, my wife and I were discussing her job (she is a concierge and assistant activities coordinator at an Assisted Living Center), thinking about ideas that would be relevant for senior citizens, and we simultaneously thought of doing a presentation to the residents about how to enjoy technology with their loved ones and provide security awareness for cybersecurity for them. So as quickly as we said it, I started putting the ideas in motion. I am now embarking on another rewarding journey that has me both excited to teach and learn from the residents. I am starting by reviewing the existing resources available on the Internet and will incorporate some themes. Most importantly, I will be sharing the presentation with my subscribers as a subscriber only benefit.
